If you are a parent who would like to have your child participate in a club, there are many active 4-H Shooting sports clubs in NJ. Please visit the county links to the left for locations, main contact person and meeting times of clubs. You can also contact your local Cooperative Extension office to see if new clubs are forming. 4-H Shooting Sports programs for children are also offered at Lindley G. Cook 4-H Camp during the summer camping program.
If you are only interested in competition or individual lessons for you or your child, then 4-H shooting sports may not be for you.
We utilize shooting sports as a vehicle for youth development, and a key component of that is working together in groups. We do have a few opportunities for inter-club matches, and offer an invitational gathering for all clubs in the spring, but we do not focus on creating competitive shooters.
If you are interested in forming a shooting sports club, you will need to first approach your Rutgers Cooperative Extension agent of the county you live in to see you can start a club. Once you get approval and complete the volunteer process, we can get the ball rolling to get your club going. The training to run a shooting sports program is offered in the early fall and on the last weekend of April, and you can get certified in Archery, Air Rifle, or one of the other curriculums. For details about the 14 hour training, please visit the instructor training page. Once certified, you can instruct youth. The State program also can loan a limited amount of archery or air rifle equipment for short periods of time to get your club off the ground.

Burlington County
This summer McGuire Youth Programs partnered with Garden State Archery Club in Jacobstown, NJ and the Burlington County 4-H Cooperative Extension to develop a 4-H Archery Club for our youth in the 4th-8th grades. Garden State Archers purchased twelve youth bows, opened their club to our youth, and provided 4-H certified instructors. The Burlington County 4-H office paid for the 4-H Shooting Sports instructors’ course as well as providing funding to purchase arrows, arm guards and fletching.
Our program offered two separate archery clubs, one for 4th-6th graders and one for the Middle School youth 7th & 8th grade. Each club had twelve members. The members spent the summer learning the history of archery, archery safety, arrow fletching, shooting techniques, bow maintenance, scoring, setting up a practice course and a true love for the sport. By the end of the summer, the youth were setting up the practice area and they even went out on the course to shoot at distances up to thirty yards. As soon as we get through the NJ winter, our youth will start shooting again. Thanks to the support of all of our partners, this club was a HUGE success.Camden County
