The workshop is for those currently involved in the 4-H Shooting Sports Program and those interested in becoming instructors. Instructors must be 21 years or older. Assistant Instructors (18 + years of age) are welcome. We encourage participation regardless of gender or physical challenges. The goal is to involve people who are interested in teaching young people how to shoot safely and learn about the natural environment. Your county must receive a completed application before you attend the workshop.

The New Jersey 4-H Shooting Sports Program in cooperation with the New York 4-H Shooting Sports Program is hosting this workshop to certify or re-certify volunteer leaders as 4-H Shooting Sports Instructors. A minimum of 14 hours training in the disciplines will be done the 4-H way:
" Learn By Doing ".
Adults will be certified to teach the discipline to youth participants in a formal 4-H Shooting Sports Program as well as in a camp situation. Each state maintains it’s own standards for certification which may exceed those established by the National Committee. Participants will be able to complete requirements in only one discipline. All equipment will be supplied. A special component at the workshop will be a focus on club development and the establishment of an advisory committee.
The workshop will feature training in the following disciplines:
Archery: Archery involves a fascinating group of sports for people of all ages. The fundamentals are simple. The requirements are few. A new archer can be shooting fairly well within a short time, if he or she has the benefit of a planned approach to developing the basics of form. The lessons taught in this course cover the basics of archery. They present the beginning archer with a broad, sound foundation for learning the discipline and enjoying archery over a lifetime. Many approaches have been used to teach archery. Some are effective; others interfere with learning. The approach in these lessons has proven successful with young people and adults across the country.
Coordinator: This course is for the club or county level coordinator. The course teaches basic consensus decision making techniques, the NJ 4-H developmental learning models, dealing with difficult situations and conflict resolution, risk management ,fund raising, volunteer management, paperwork and state policies and procedures.
Hunting: This curriculum covers many aspects of hunting. Instructors will learn about the philosophy, laws and reasons why we hunt. A focus on planning, purchase and care of equipment, sound hunting techniques and safety will be emphasized. Instructors will also discuss the aspects of hunting different types of game.
Living History: Within this shooting sports discipline you can go back in history and learn about life from a different era. Instructors will custom tailor their program to assist their members in discovering our rich history. Period clothing, cooking, lifestyles and multi-discipline clubs will be the focus of this class.
Muzzle loading: Contrary to popular belief, the sport of muzzle loading is not as complicated, messy or dangerous as many instructors think. Nor is it any more difficult to teach than conventional firearms. As one of the fastest growing shooting sports, muzzle loading has a wide appeal for both young and old. This curriculum takes you through the steps to create a viable program in your clubs. Like the other Basic Firearms Education Program courses, the muzzle loading courses are designed for the new shooter.
Shotgun: This program is designed to teach the fundamentals of safe and successful shotgun shooting. Shotgun knowledge, the basics of shotgun safety and proper shotgun shooting form are taught before introducing formal shotgun games.
Rifle: Rifle shooting is a very safe sport, but it is only as safe as the people participating in it. We will be teaching discipline, range control commands and range courtesy. This program takes the instructor through the basics of instruction and the first shot
