New Jersey 4-H Shooting Sports Shooting Sports

How to Join

If you are a parent who would like to have your child participate in a club, there are many active 4-H Shooting sports clubs in NJ. Please visit the NJ Club section of our web site for locations and meeting times of clubs. There is a link to the lead instructors in each county that has a club. You can also contact your local Cooperative Extension office to see if new clubs are forming. 4-H Shooting Sports programs for children are also offered at Lindley G. Cook 4-H Camp during the summer camping program.

If you are only interested in competition or individual lessons for you or your child, then 4-H shooting sports may not be for you. We utilize shooting sports as a vehicle for youth development, and a key component of that is working together in groups. We do have a few opportunities for inter-club matches, and offer an invitational gathering for all clubs in the spring, but we do not only focus on creating competitive shooters.

If you are interested in forming a shooting sports club, you will need to first approach your Rutgers Cooperative Extension agent of the county you live in to see you can start a club. Once you get approval and complete the volunteer process, we can get the ball rolling to get your club going. The training to run a shooting sports program is offered in the early fall and on the last weekend of April, and you can get certified in Archery, Air Rifle, or one of the other curriculums. Or you can attend a training in a neighboring state. For details about the 14 hour training, please visit the instructor training page. Once certified, you can instruct youth. The State program also can loan a limited amount of archery or air rifle equipment for short periods of time to get your club off the ground.

If you need assistance or have more questions, please contact Jim Tavares, the NJ State coordinator for 4-H Shooting Sports.

Youth development is the primary goal of the 4-H Shooting Sports Program. 4-H Shooting Sports provide an outstanding way of providing human growth and development in the life skills identified by the National 4-H Program. We strive to each safe and responsible use of firearms and archery equipment at home, on the shooting range, or in the field, including sound decision making, self discipline, and concentration.
